New Zealand: betting facts (2026)

Betting in New Zealand is regulated by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

No public register. We publish licence lists only from the regulator's own website or documents. For New Zealand none is published, so there is no list page; the facts below are what we could verify.

Licensed operators: no public register

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 (Royal assent 28 April 2026) creates New Zealand's first licences for online casino gambling: at most 15 licences at any time, no person with significant influence over more than 3, and operators must take all reasonable steps to ensure players are at least 18. The DIA expects to issue licences from early 2027. Online casinos that served New Zealanders before 1 May 2026 may keep operating until 1 December 2026 but must not advertise; from then on only licensed operators (and successful applicants under an exemption while assessed) may offer online casino gambling. There is no register yet; we will add it when the DIA publishes licensees.

Minimum age

Minimum age: 18 (Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, s. 38; s. 66 makes gambling on behalf of a person under 18 an offence).

Tax on winnings

No tax on winnings: Inland Revenue lists 'winnings from gambling or a New Zealand lottery' among payments you do not need to report.
