Questions
Is online gambling legal in South Africa?
Online sports and horse-race betting is legal with a bookmaker licensed by a South African provincial gambling board. Other online gambling, such as online casino games, is prohibited by section 11 of the National Gambling Act, which bans 'interactive games' unless a national law authorises them.
How old do you have to be?
18. The National Gambling Board says betting is legal only if the operator holds a provincial licence and you are over 18.
How do I check if a betting site is licensed?
Licensed operators show their provincial licence on their home page. The National Gambling Board also publishes a national register of licensed operators. Its online version does not list web addresses, so match the licence number shown on the site against the register.
Is a law to legalise online casinos coming?
A private member's Remote Gambling Bill was introduced in Parliament in 2024 but has not been passed.
